ΜΙΑ ΧΑΡΑΥΓΗ ΣΤΗ ΔΥΣΗ ΤΗΣ



Η παλιά Χαραυγή είναι ένα προσφυγικό χωριό που
θυσιάστηκε, όπως και ένα μεγάλο κομμάτι του
Νομού Κοζάνης, στον ενεργειακό βωμό αυτής της
χώρας.
Η απαλλοτρίωση του χωριού έγινε υπό κρατική
πίεση, χάριν του ενεργειακού μονόδρομου της
εποχής του λιγνίτη. Οι κάτοικοι αντιστάθηκαν. Το
κράτος επιβλήθηκε. Η Νέα Χαραυγή χτίστηκε
κοντά στην Κοζάνη στο όνομα της καινοτομίας,
της αλλαγής, της ευκολίας, της ελπίδας. Το μόνο
που κατάφεραν οι κάτοικοι τελικά είναι να γίνουν
ένα προάστιο της Κοζάνης χωρίς ταυτότητα, χωρίς
αυτονομία• «σαν διαμονή σε ξενοδοχείο», λένε
πολλοί.
Η παλιά Χαραυγή είναι ένα χωριό φάντασμα που
εδώ και είκοσι πέντε χρόνια βρίσκεται εγκατα-
λειμμένο μέσα στα ορυχεία της ΔΕΗ. Ο ήχος των
ταινιόδρομων που μεταφέρουν κάρβουνο στα
διπλανά εργοστάσια κυριαρχεί στο χώρο και σύ-
ντομα γίνεται τόσο οικείος που αγνοείς τη μόνιμη
παρουσία του. Τόπος βουτηγμένος στην τέφρα του
λιγνίτη, χτυπημένος από ανέμους και ανθρώπους,
απορροφάται καθημερινά από τη γη μέσα από ένα
αργό, φυσικό πάντρεμα των υλικών του. Η εκκλη-
σία, ο κεντρικός δρόμος, τα μαγαζιά, τα σπίτια, το
σχολείο είναι όλα εκεί, σε μια αδιέξοδη αναμονή.
Συχνά, τα χαλασμένα ρουλεμάν των ταινιόδρομων
στριγγλίζουν δυνατά, σαν να προφέρουν ακατα-
νόητες λέξεις, άλλοτε ευχές και άλλοτε κατάρες,
μπερδεμένες αλλόκοτα σε μια γλώσσα που μόνο
ο τόπος γνωρίζει, θρηνώντας την κάθε χαραυγή,
την κάθε δύση.

First Light Waning


The old Charavgi (literally in Greek “First Light”)
is a refugees’ village sacrificed, much like a
significant part of the Prefecture of Kozani, on the
energy altar of this country.
The expropriation of the village was carried out
under State pressure due to the inescapable
electricity-generation restructuring brought
about by the age of lignite. The inhabitants put
up resistance but the State imposed its own will
on the citizens. The New Charavgi was built near
Kozani in favour of novelty, change, convenience,
auspicious hope. The only thing that these
people managed to do is to become a suburb of
Kozani without a discernible identity, without any
autonomy; it might as well be a hotel, many of
them attest.
The old Charavgi is a ghost village lying abandoned
for the past twenty five years inside the
mines of the State Corporation of Electricity.
The sound of the belt-conveyors carrying coal to
the nearby factories dominates the surrounding
space to the point that within a few minutes it becomes
so familiar that you ignore its permanent
presence. A location sunk in the cinders of lignite
languishes on a daily basis; brutalised by both
man and winds it slowly becomes one with the
earth in a natural, slow marriage of its components.
The church, the high street, the stores, the
school find themselves in a wait that can lead
nowhere. Quite often the busted ball-bearings of
the belt-conveyors shriek loudly as if they were
uttering incomprehensible words, resembling at
times wishes and at other times curses, uncannily
jumbled in a language that only the location
comprehends mourning every time light breaks,
every time the sun sets.
